• If your pet is tangled or has knots, also called “matts”, do not bathe the pet until you or a groomer get all the tangles out. Water will actually make the knots tighter making it harder to brush them out! If matting is severe, please seek the help of a professional.

  • Brush your pet’s teeth 2-3 times per week. It is known to us now that this can extend your pet’s life and keep plaque and gum disease at bay. If you can, start brushing teeth at a young age so your pet gets used to this.

  • Always keep your pet’s nails trimmed. The longer they get the harder it is to get them short again.

  • Some things that are not toxic to humans can be toxic to dogs! Do not feed your dog raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, avocado, gum, candies, baking goods( especially if sweetened with xylitol), and never let your pet get ahold of human medications! You can visit the ASPCA website and visit the page titled “Make Your Pets Home Poison Safe” to print out a comprehensive list of items to avoid. If your pet ingests a toxic substance call the Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

  • Don’t shave your pet! Our pets have their coats for a reason. Many of us (even me) keep our pets fairly short because it looks cute and is easily maintained- but we must leave enough coat to make sure they are protected from the sun as well as insects and other things that should not be in contact with their delicate skin. Remember, a coat keeps an animal insulated, keeping them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. You will also avoid future skin and coat health conditions.
